12/20/2023 0 Comments Beachfront and LagoonfrontWe hadn't been over to our property in 5 months. First I was away traveling, then I cam back with a broken rib from a car accident, and then they had stopped running the ferry for low season, so there wasn't an inexpensive way to get over. And then it was rainy season- rain, and more rain.
Finally when the boys were down for Christmas, we decided we'd go over in a private boat for a couple days. Auri hadn't yet seen the cabin, and I wanted to install full rain gutters (we just had a little piece of one up), and start sealing some of the gaps along the roofline. We dropped off stuff, and Deo and Auri rode over to the cay to pick up lumber to seal up the gaps along the roofline. When they got therr, the hardware store was closed for lunch. 2 hours later, it opened, but had no lumber. I told them to get whatever they could find (a sheet of plywood) and head on back. At our land, we saw that the back, marshy part of the land had flooded out- the water came up about 30 feet or so behind the back of the cabin. Then it rained heavily our first night, and we awoke to water all the way under part of the cabin! What does one do in this circumstance? Put in the kayak and go kayaking in the backyard 🤣 The weather was pretty bad for both the days we were over- sometimes just blustery and overcast, and sometimes pouring rain.

AuthorI'm Mel. Together with my 2 sons, Deo and Auri, we form the DAM team (Deo, Auri, Mel). I'm Canadian, my boys are half Canadian, half Honduran, and have grown up on the island of Roatan. We have a hostel in Roatan called Roatan Backpackers' Hostel, which I started when the boys were young. Now that they are adults, we've decided to start a new venture together on the beautiful neighbouring island of Guanaja. In 2022, we purchased our land, and in March of 2023, we put up a little cabin so that we have a little spot to sleep in and store things while we slowing work to get our project together. We are hoping to get our business running in the next 3-5 years, with these next few years giving us a chance to save up capital and advance a bit at a time at planting and infrastructure. Our blog will share our adventure with anyone who wants to follow it! Archives
